Dark Spots Be Gone

If you suffer from acne you know what it feels like to have dark spots and it’s one of your primary skin concerns. Being of Indian origin and having a melanin rich complexion means we are more prone to dark spots than those with lighter skin tones. Some of us want to flaunt bare makeup looks but don't have the luxury or the confidence to do so. So what do we do about dark spots? Unfortunately there is no quick fix when it comes to getting rid of dark spots but there are multiple things you could do that are highly effective but will take some time. The first thing you should know is that your skin take around 28- 30 days for the entire epidermis (top layer of skin) to shed off giving you new skin. We’ve listed some of the best ways to help remove dark spots:

  1. Exfoliate with a Toner- A toner, also acts as an exfoliant helping speed up the process of removing dead skin cells from the skin's top layer. Using a toner daily is mild on your skin (unlike harsh granular exfoliants causing micro tears) and helps reveal newer skin cells thus removing dark spots completely.

  1. Skin Lighteners- Licorice is a natural skin lightener that help brighten skin and is used in many products to help reduce the appearance of dark spots. Glycolic acid is another exfoliant that is used to brighten skin but should be used in small percentages.

  1. Skin Peels- A favorite of dermatologists, a skin peel is filled with ingredients that cause the top layer of skin to shed at an accelerated rate and reveal the lower layer of skin. This helps reduce the appearance of dark spots.

  1. Microdermabrasion- There are different techniques used for microdermabrasion but the principal remains the same- a process used to renew skin tone and texture. Tiny particles are used to exfoliate the top layer of skin with minimal exposure and sucks them out at the same time. The depth of the abrasion depends on the pressure used by the applicator. This is a very popular technique used with people that have wrinkles, dark spots and large pores.

There are always new innovations on the market with how to remove dark spots but the methods listed above have been tried and tested and have been proven to be successful for a lot of people that have acne problems. You don't have to pick one method and can do multiple to gain the maximum benefits. For example a skin peel once a week with the daily use of a toner could be used. You could also try skin lighteners a week or 2 after microdermabrasion. When doing peels or microdermabrasion, or any in clinic procedures, make sure to check with your skin aesthetician/ dermatologist about what the right time is to start using other products.
